In my first post I'm supposed to give a little info about myself as well as some discussion of what I read, but considering I've been in higher ed for going on 6 years, I don't read much unless its for school so this will probably be (relatively) short!
I'm from Minnesota but am currently living in Indiana while I attend grad school for my MLS. I have undergraduate degrees in Anthropology and Spanish and a minor in Information Design from the University of Minnesota Duluth.
I'm accustomed to getting the, "Oh a librarian, eh? Well you must read a lot." reaction when I tell people my career plans. I do like to read, but as I mentioned before reading has taken a backseat to my education, extra-curricular activities, and career (in the making) so I don't read nearly as much as I did back in high school. Plus, I've found I'm more interested in the information (-seeking, -sharing, -gathering...etc) side of librarianship than the reader's advisory/reading side of it. But, that's one of the reasons I am taking this class...to get back into the swing of reading for fun and making time to pick up a book because I do miss it.
I would say my favorite genre is historical fiction. As far back as I can remember I've always enjoyed it (anyone remember the American Diaries series? I was all about those). I say I don't really like Westerns or Sci Fi, but mainly because I haven't ever really read any.
I'm just starting to try to figure out what appeal factors matter to me, though I know one for certain that does-pace. I'm always busy, so if I do pick up a book its got to be a speed-read, page-turner with a plot that starts right away! If it doesn't hook me from the very beginning it'll easily fall to the bottom of my list of priorities!
I will also admit that I've become an insane multi-tasker since entering college...If I can't do more than one thing at a time it feels like I'm not getting enough done! I can really identify with the following video about college students when one participant holds up a sign that says, 'I am a multi-tasker. (I have to be.)'
Not everything in there is relevent to me, or this class, but I will say I've got a new-found appreciation for books on tape. I appreciate being able to 'read' while I do things like cook dinner or get ready for work (further feeding my need to multi-task, surely).
Anyway, hopefully I'll get back in the knack of reading for fun, reading for me, and taking the time to stop and enjoy a slower paced life while learning (more than) a few new things about reader's advisory!
I hope this class will turn you back into a fiction nut - got to have something to do in between sending out resumes!
ReplyDeleteLove the video...love that it started out with a McLuhan quote, whose work I think is incredibly applicable to this course what with ebooks and audiobooks changing the way we read. We will talk a little about him when we get to ebooks.
I also have a great appreciation for audiobooks. It's often the only way I can squeeze in reading around classes and work -- when I have a half-hour to an hour long drive... I can get some reading done! I can read while I do laundry, wash dishes, walk the dog, etc. Sometimes I worry that I lose parts of a story when I do it... but it's the only way I can get it all done.
